Mesut Ozil (German pronunciation: [ˈmeːzut ˈøːzil], Turkish: [me̞ˈsut ˈø̞zil]; born October 1988) is a German Muslim footballer who plays as an attacking midfielder. Özil has played for the German age group since 2006 and the Germany national football team from 2009 to 2018.



His performance at the 2010 FIFA World Cup earned him international attention and was nominated for the Golden Ball Award, which is given to the best player of the tournament. Ozil began his senior career in the Bundesliga in 2006 with his hometown club Charleque 04.




He moved to Werder Bremen in 2008 and impressed with his impressive performances at the 2010 World Cup, Real Madrid signed him in August of that year. Arsenal signed him for a club record £42.5 million on the final day of the 2013 summer transfer window.
